Gates supervisor: Additional detox beds provide breakthrough in opioid epidemic
August 02, 2018 07:43 PM
A new weapon in the fight against opioids has arrived as leaders in Gates announce 50 new detox beds.
The addition is thanks to a collaboration with Summit Behavioral Healthcare, a company that specializes in addiction services.
Right now, Syracuse Behavioral Health is the only local facility with a medical detox program for people addicted to opioids.
"When we call and we only have 25 beds and you have anywhere from 80 to 300 people trying to get one of those beds, says David Attridge, Recovery Now NY. "That's when we have to start looking outside the area."
As Executive Director of Recovery Now NY David Attridge spends a lot of time on the phone trying to find a bed for someone trying to get clean, he often turns to the Gates Police Department and Chief Jim Van Brederode.
"...Dave and I have personally driven up to Erie County Medical Center three times in the last two weeks, getting somebody up there," says Van Brederode. Then that's your next logistical problem, once we do find a bed, how are you going to get that person down there."
This new collaboration will change that.
"We have a breakthrough today that we want to talk about...approximately 50 detox beds," says Gates Supervisor Mark Assini.
Summit Behavioral Healthcare, a nationwide healthcare provider, offers in-patient detox and rehab. They will make beds available at three locations in Pennsylvania.
There is a facility in Westfield which is about two and a half hours away. The others are both five hours away. However, transportation isn't an issue. Summit will also provide that.
All you need to do is call to Amanda Colbert who is the Summit liaison in Monroe County.
